MANILA - The government is looking to assign at least one hospital per region as a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) referral hospital as it sought to boost its efforts against the fast-spreading virus.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said they have already looked at 75 potential hospitals across the country.

"There are 75 hospitals being looked at with at least 1 [referral] hospital in every region," Vergeire said in a virtual press briefing Saturday.

The health department has been coordinating with the said hospitals, Vergeire added.

"Patuloy ang pakikipag-ugnayan ng DOH sa mga ospital sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng bansa," she said.

Earlier, the DOH designated the Philippine General Hospital in Manila, the Lung Center of the Philippines in Quezon City, and the Dr. Jose M. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital in Caloocan City.

The Department of Health has tallied 6,087 cases, with 516 recoveries and 397 deaths, as of Saturday.
