MANILA -- President Rodrigo Duterte said Saturday he would step down at the end of his term, as the country geared for midterm elections in May.

The President, whose 6-year term will end in June 2022, said he was "tired" and that did not have the "choice of being a politician forever."

"I assure you, everybody here, that I will step down at the end of my term," Duterte said at the start of a speech in Iloilo province.

"As a matter of fact, I'm tired, really tired," he said.

Duterte then proceeded with his speech, talking about his fight against corruption in government as well as the dangers of illegal drugs and the long-running communist insurgency.

"I will not stay forever, I will not be part of the political scenery in the coming years," he said.
