Bongbong, contrary to his wife, says no results yet

MANILA (UPDATE) - Former Sen. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., his family and staff have taken tests for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the politician's wife said Thursday, even as she debunked talk that the ex-lawmaker was allegedly in critical condition.

Marcos' sister, incumbent Sen. Imee Marcos, earlier belied rumors that the defeated vice presidential candidate was intubated due to pneumonia and was set to be flown to Singapore for treatment.

"Contrary to the rumors circulating, my husband is well. His lungs did not collapse," Mr. Marcos' wife Liza said in a statement along with a photo of the former senator sitting in bed and holding a copy of today's newspaper.

"He was not airlifted in Manong Chavit's plane to get treatment in Singapore. He is not dying nor is he dead," she said, referring to fellow Ilocano politician, Narvacan, Ilocos Sur Mayor Chavit Singson.

MARCOS FAMILY, 'ENTIRE STAFF' TEST FOR COVID-19

Mr. Marcos, his family and their employees decided to take the coronavirus test after the former lawmaker reportedly felt "unwell" after his trip to Spain, where thousands have fallen ill with the virus, his wife said.

She said they tested negative.

"We are taking the COVID-19 outbreak seriously and have instituted sanitation procedures here at home. We hope you and your family can do the same," she said.

BONGBONG SAYS 'NO RESULTS YET'

In a separate post, the former senator posted a similar photo layout as his wife did, but clarified that he has yet to receive his results.

"A few days ago I was feeling a little under the weather and as a result went to get checked. We are still waiting for the results," he said.

"I am doing okay and contrary to popular belief, I am home on self-quarantine... Fortunately, I feel much better and am getting stronger by the day," he said.

Mr. Marcos' statement made no mention that his family and entire staff also underwent testing for the coronavirus.

Several politicians, including Sen. Imee, were earlier bashed online for taking the coronavirus test despite a Department of Health policy that the swabbing units should only be administered to the elderly and symptomatic patients due to the lack kits in the Philippines.

A Senate investigation, chaired by Sen. Marcos, earlier found that the DOH only had 2,000 COVID-19 testing kits days before the Philippines declared a state of public health emergency due to the rapid spread of the global pandemic.

ABS-CBN News has reached out to the Marcos camp to clarify the conflicting statements, but they have yet to respond to messages.
