Rice farmers in Bohol have resorted to planting alternative crops amid the dry spell affecting the region.
In Barangay Balbalan in Dimiao town, farmers have started planting watermelon in their rice fields.
The seeds were given by the Provincial Agriculture Office. The farmers may earn up to P20,000 by May when the watermelons are harvested.
According to farmer Renante Dayao, this will be enough to make ends meet while the dry spell is ongoing.
Meanwhile, farmers in Lila town are already harvesting their rice to prevent further damage from extreme heat.
Bohol Provincial Agriculturist Larry Pamugas said they are preparing for the farmers' insurance claim. Those severely affected will be paid based on their loss.
The local government of Bohol is planning on implementing cloud seeding operations by May. State weather bureau PAGASA said this is the best month for cloud seeding.
