This map from Phivolcs shows the epicenter of a magnitude 3.6 quake, the first of 7 tremors that rattled Cebu province today.

MANILA - Seven earthquakes were recorded in Cebu province Tuesday in a span of less than 6 hours, according to the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the first tremor struck at 3:41 a.m. with a magnitude of 3.6 and a depth of 1 kilometer.

It was felt in Intensity 4 in Asturias and Busay towns, and Cebu City. Intensity 3 was also felt in Mandaue, and Intensity 2 in Lapu-Lapu.

Two minutes later, a magnitude 4.8 quake -- the strongest of the 7 recorded today -- struck the province.

With a depth of 25 kilometers, it was felt at Intensity 3 in Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue cities.

Five weaker earthquakes followed at 3:58, 4:41, 4:50, 6:17 and 9:13 a.m.

Phivolcs recorded a magnitude of 2.9 for 2 quakes, and magnitudes of 3.3, 3.2, and 2.7 for the rest.

The epicenters of all 7 earthquakes, which were tectonic in origin, were traced in Asturias town.

Phivolcs research assistant Karen Garcia said it is only normal for strong earthquakes to trigger weak tremors, as in the case of the first 2 quakes that rocked Cebu today.

"Normal lang po iyun kasi medyo malakas po ang naunang incident," she said in a phone interview with ABS-CBN News.

Phivolcs has not received reports of damaged property due to the earthquakes, Garcia added.
