MANILA — Two residents of San Juan tested positive for the novel coronavirus at a private hospital in Parañaque, its mayor said Tuesday.

The 2 patients -- a couple -- opted to be confined initially at the Unihealth-Parañaque Hospital and Medical Center because their child worked there, said Mayor Edwin Olivarez.

The pair was transferred Monday to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in neighboring Muntinlupa, he said.

Parañaque authorities will disinfect the areas visited by the couple before they were confined, said Olivarez.

The Philippines so far confirmed 24 cases of the disease, including incidents of localized transmission,

The respiratory disease has killed some 4,000, with more than 110,000 cases recorded in over 100 territories since emerging from China late last year.

Olivarez said he met with operators of mostly Chinese-run gambling hubs in his city on Monday and urged them to refrain from hiding information on COVID-19 cases.

"Ganoon po ang briefing natin sa kanila... dapat po iyong mga data ay hindi wini-withhold, lalong-lalo na kahit private iyan," he told DZMM.

The mayor said he had also released a memorandum that discouraged crowd-drawing activities.

Commercial establishments in the city were also urged to check the temperature of customers at entrances, he said.
