MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Monica “Nikki” Prieto-Teodoro as his special envoy to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).

Appointment papers released by Malacañang on Friday show Teodoro shall serve as special envoy to Unicef from Sept. 26, 2017 to Sept. 27, 2018.

Teodoro, wife of former defense secretary Gilberto Teodoro, once served as Tarlac representative

Teodoro, a former commercial model and part of the affluent Roces and Prieto clans, was elected to Congress in 2007.

As a lawmaker, she authored several bills for the protection of children, including the Anti-Child Pornography Act and the Anti-Corporal Punishment Act. She also headed the House Committee on the Welfare of Children in the 14th Congress.

She had been rumored as one of the President’s choices as replacement of Judy Taguiwalo as social welfare secretary. However, the President has yet to pick a new secretary for the department, which is currently being led by officer-in-charge Emmanuel Leyco.
