MANILA - Former President Benigno Aquino III said Tuesday that people have a tendency to gravitate towards authoritarian leaders because of impatience.
“Basically merong mga taong frustrated… Nakita ang the authoritarian set up things can be faster,” he said after acknowledging that democracy can be challenging at times.
Aquino said people always want to try something new when they feel that things aren’t changing.
“We keep relearning the lessons of the past. There is always a tendency to be excessive. You will commit the same mistakes that we have before,” he said.
He added, “Perhaps in this day of instant everything, instant solutions are so tempting. And somehow the lessons of even a few decades back, a few years back are lost on everybody."
Aquino attended Tuesday a democracy forum at the Ateneo Professional Schools in Makati City - report from Kristine Sabillo, ABS-CBN News
