MANILA (UPDATE)—Salvacion Gerona, Vice-President Leni Robredo’s mother who was a career educator, passed away on Saturday, Robredo confirmed on social media. Gerona was 83.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Robredo said her mother’s wake will start at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Eternal Gardens, Balatas Road in Naga City.

“Thank you to everyone who offered prayers and sent condolences,” she said.

News of Gerona’s deteriorating health emerged last month when Robredo posted on social media that her mother’s condition “turned for the worst” but that it later improved.

Robredo did not specify Gerona’s ailment.

Gerona was a teacher by profession and served Universidad de Santa Isabel in Naga, one of the oldest schools in the country.

Robredo had said her mother was “a teacher all her life.”

“She started teaching at the age of 18 and she still teaches now that she’s 81. She was also Adviser of the School Paper, Drama Teacher and Ballet Dancer,” Robredo wrote on Facebook in May 2018.

In a tweet, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson offered her sympathies to the vice-president.
