Senatorial candidate Lito Lapid has rejected a debate challenge posed by opposition bets, saying flaunting one's ability in front of a public forum was not his thing.
"Hindi naman ako nakikipag-contest sa pagalingan eh. Sila naman magaling. 'Yung galing nila siguro hindi ko alam pero may alam din naman akong di nila alam," Lapid said during a press conference.
Lapid was responding to the statements of senatorial candidates from opposition coalition Otso Diretso who dared those from the pro-administration slate to publicly discuss issues in "whatever format."
"We are challenging the administration slate to a debate anytime, anywhere, kahit anong format, kahit 'Fast Talk' pa," said candidate Jose Manuel "Chel" Diokno.
But for Lapid, a candidate's debate performance cannot be a barometer for one's ability to serve.
"Hindi naman siguro mapapakita sa debates iyung kagalingan ng isang taong gustong tumulong para sa ating mamamayan," said Lapid.
"Nagdidirek naman ako sa pelikula. Siguro pagdirekin mo [sila] sa pelikula, di nila alam...kaniya-kaniya lang ng pinag-aralan 'yan," he added.
Lapid served two consecutive terms as senator, last of which during Sixteenth Congress in 2016.
