MANILA - The powerful Commission on Appointments (CA) approved the nomination of Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II on Wednesday despite opposition from Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.

The commission gave its nod to the the ad interim appointment of Aguirre in a plenary session that came on the heels of a CA panel's confirmation hearing and executive session.

Trillanes, during the confirmation hearing, argued that Aguirre was unfit to become justice secretary due to his alleged involvement in several anomalies in the Bureau of Corrections and the Bureau of Immigration.

Among the issues raised against the justice chief were the alleged granting of special privileges to inmates who testified against Senator Leila de Lima and the bribery scandal involving two former immigration deputy commissioners.
