MANILA - Authorities on Saturday recaptured 5 inmates who escaped from the Manjuyod District Jail in Negros Oriental, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said.

The inmates bolted from detention on Monday, Feb. 3, an incident still under investigation.

The 2 inmates -- Janly Callao and Ronie Flores -- surrendered following a negotiation with their relatives, said Jail Chief Supt. Paulino Moreno Jr., BJMP Central Visayas director.

The 3 other inmates -- Joseph Casido, Julan Paculanang and Lito Pedro -- were arrested in a follow-up operation, he added.

Instead of sending them back to the Manjuyod District Jail, the inmates were detained in the province's Bais City Jail and Dumaguete City Jail.

In the wake of the incident, BJMP chief Allan Iral warned all regional directors to be more proactive in attending to security concerns in jails.

"We should always be steps ahead in monitoring the security situation in our facilities. Conduct jail inspections more often," he said.
