MANILA (UPDATE) - President Rodrigo Duterte will not be able to attend an event in Palo, Leyte Friday because he was “not feeling well,” his long-time aide Bong Go said.

Duterte was supposed to attend the Barangay Summit on Peace and Order in Palo, Leyte at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Go did not provide other details about the state of the 73-year-old chief executive's health, who has long been rumored to be nursing a serious illness.

Malacañang has repeatedly dismissed calls for it to release regular bulletins on the health of Duterte, the oldest in history to be elected Philippine president.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the President's absence in today's event should not be a cause for concern.

"Well he is not Superman, every person does not feel well sometimes... I don't think that the President cancelling an event in Tacloban (sic) because he is not feeling well is a cause of concern," Panelo said in a text message.

"We should in fact commend the President for knowing when to cancel a trip and resting his body if he is not feeling his usual strong self."

The President was out of the public eye on Thursday, as he privately received Russian Ambassador to the Philippines Igor Kovaev and Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Rafael Harpaz.

The President was last seen in public last Tuesday when he attended the premiere night of the biopic of former police chief Ronald dela Rosa.

Duterte earlier admitted that he suffers from back pains, migraines and Buerger's disease, a cause of blockages in the blood vessels, associated with smoking during his youth.

In October, Duterte said he underwent endoscopy and colonoscopy because he suffers from Barret’s esophagus, a complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

He also said he was cancer-free, brushing aside speculation about his health.
