BRP Andres Bonifacio in Davao City

DAVAO CITY — The latest ship acquired by the Philippine Navy, BRP Andres Bonifacio, docked here on Saturday.

BRP Andres Bonifacio is a 378-foot Hamilton Class high-endurance cutter, which has a cruising range of 12,000 nautical miles with a speed of 14 knots operating in diesel mode. It can reach 27 knots while operating on both main gas turbines.

It has a wardroom, 3 mess halls and 25 rooms.

The vessel also has an array of weapons, a retractable hangar and a flight deck that caters to helicopter operations and storage.

The ship can conduct search and rescue operations in high seas, combat operations and maritime protection.

The ship was officially transferred to the Philippine Navy in July 2016.

BRP Andres Bonifacio houses 16 officers and 90 enlisted officers. The vessel also carries 45 graduating Philippine Military Academy cadets who will become navy officers.

Navy officials are here to train cadets and show to the public the ship.

"Malaking tulong ito sa operation ng Philippine Navy lalo na sa maritime protection," said Commander Virgilio de Guzman, executive officer of BRP Andres Bonifacio.

The ship will stay here until Monday.

The BRP Andres Bonifacio is the third modern ship on the Philippine Navy's fleet, the other two being BRP Gregorio del Pilar and BRP Ramon Alcaraz which were acquired in 2011 and 2012.
