MANILA - The Bureau of Customs on Monday said it intercepted P128.9 million worth of various illicit drugs in separate shipments this month.

Several parcels containing the contraband arrived in the country from Pakistan last January 4 and 10, Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña said in a press conference.

The parcels were sent by Nastin Akhtar, Qaiser Mehmood Poutt, Zahid Hussain and Imran Abbas.

The consignees -- identified as Peter Parcon, Jocelyn Villarino, Rosalie Rosales, Lucy Marpuri and Dang Solvino -- did not show up to to claim the package, prompting its inspection, said Lapeña.

The parcels yielded over 2 million tablets of Valium, Temazepam, Pinnix and other dangerous drugs frequently abused in parties and sold for a higher price in the black market, he said.

Lapeña said a syndicate may be behind the shipment of narcotics, which is now being investigated by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

Authorities have also coordinated with the Pakistani government about the incident.
