MANILA -- Pets in areas affected by ash fall from Taal should be brought indoors, a veterinarian said, as the volcano continued to rumble on Monday.

Animals inhale more particles at a time compared to humans, said Dr. Silver Nano, who also advised pet owners to use double curtains.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) also shared tips on how to take care of pets during this time:

- Keep them indoors if you can.

- Make sure food and water bowls are not exposed.

- Watch out for coughing, difficulty breathing, sneezing etc. If pets exhibit these symptoms, have them checked.

- If exposed, remove ash from your pets by wiping them down or giving them a bath. Do not let them lick the ash.

Ash is abrasive and can do permanent damage to an animal’s eye. It can be fatal to animals with prolonged exposure, said PAWS Executive Director Anna Cabrera.

Animal feed in ashfall areas should be washed before giving these to livestock.
