Two of eight people killed in a vintage bomb explosion in Sirawai town, Zamboanga del Norte Wednesday afternoon died while being treated in a hospital. Liezl Lecastesantos, ABS-CBN News


At least eight people were killed after a vintage bomb went off in Sirawai town, Zamboanga del Norte, Wednesday afternoon.

Killed on the spot were Marcelo Antogon, teen brothers Roel and Ladi Balamban, Robert Timbulaan and his siblings aged 6 and 9.

Two others who have yet to be identified died while being treated in a hospital.

Sirawai Mayor Gamar Janihim said Antogon, a rubber tapper at Sirawai Plywood and Lumber Corp, found an 81-mm mortar in a river in Sitio Washington, Barangay Guban.

Janihim said the worker brought the bomb to their bunkhouse where other workers also stayed.

Out of curiosity, Antogon tried to pry the bomb open by pounding it using a nail and hammer.

A few seconds later, the the bomb went off, instantly killing Antogon and seven others.

Five people were also wounded in the blast.

Authorities said Antogon failed to inform the company about the bomb he had found.
