MANILA - The Department of Justice (DOJ) is ready to investigate the price hike imposed on Beep cards that are used as stored-value train tickets in Metro Manila, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said Friday.

The P10 increase on Beep cards may be "taken up at the next cabinet meeting," Guevarra said in a statement.

"The DOJ will await a formal request from the DOTr (Department of Transportation) or a direct order from the President," he said.

The price hike was due to a provision in the concession agreement between the DOTr and AF Payments Inc., the Light Rail Transit Authority, which manages the LRT-2, earlier said.

The new price of the reloadable card will not affect fare rates in Metro Manila's MRT-3, LRT 1 and 2, the DOTr said in a separate statement.

"Currently, the DOTr is reviewing the said concession agreement and all its provisions, with the end view of determining how best to protect public interest," it said.
