The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) monitored the first blaze on Thursday when a kitchen fire was left unattended at a house in Barangay Biak Na Bato, La Castellena.

The flames quickly spread along nearby areas in the vicinity of the park, and damaged around 50 hectares of land.

Friday's blaze, which may have been caused by a lighted cigarette butt, burned around 120 hectares of cogon and shrubs.

Firefighters had difficulty putting out the blaze which hit an area high up in the mountain. Residents had to use tree branches to prevent the fire from spreading.

The incident was only controlled by Saturday morning.

DENR remained on alert Sunday to monitor other grassfires which may hit the mountain.

There was also no reported injured since alert level 1 remains hoisted over the mountain, thus prohibiting entry into its 4-kilometer permanent danger zone.
