DATU SALIBO, Maguindanao (UPDATED) - Members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) attacked soldiers securing a dredging project in Barangay Butalo in Datu Salibo town in Maguindanao on Friday afternoon.

The commander of the Army's 2nd Mechanized Battalion, Lt. Col. Warlito Limet, said the military personnel were guarding the project when they were fired upon by the armed men.

The soldiers immediately took a defensive position and fired back on the enemies led by Commanders Abunawas and Bungos.

One official sustained slight injury on his forehead. Two civilians were also injured after being hit by stray bullets, the local government reported.

The civilians were identified as Mannex Indiong, 30, and Tammy Musanip, 19, who were brought to a hospital in Cotabato for treatment.

According to the Municipal Planning and Development Council of Datu Salibo, about 1,588 individuals were displaced due to the clash.

Limet said the BIFF opposes the dredging project, which is near the rebel group's safe haven.

Two backhoes being used in the project were also torched by the rebels.

The dredging project started on December 9, 2015 but has been delayed due to threats received by the contractor.

It was just this Friday when the project began and the contractor sent its backhoes, with the military securing the area.

Upon entering the site, however, the military discovered three improvised explosive devices (IEDs), followed by an attack from the BIFF.
