LUNA, Apayao – Sixteen years after the birth of the province of Apayao, the struggle to overcome poverty still persists.

A study recently published by the National Anti-Poverty Commission reveals that Apayao is third among provinces with the highest poverty incidence. Consequently, Apayao is the poorest province in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

But unknown to many, Apayao has gems just waiting to be discovered.

Dubbed as the last forest frontier of the Cordilleras, Apayao is home to various indigenous groups like the Isnag, Isneg, Kalinga and Bontoc. Due to its dense forests, it serves as haven to many animals, including the endangered Philippine eagle.
