MANILA -- Honda Philippines, Inc.’s much anticipated backbone Honda CB150R is now in the Philippines and will be available soon in the local market.

Also known as the “Streetfire,” the Honda CB150R was unveiled before local motorcycle enthusiasts at the 10th Inside Racing Bikefest last April.

It is being targeted for local release on June 18.

We were among the handful of media men who were invited to test the bike at the Honda Safety Driving Center and we have to say that it looks impressive.

The Honda CB150R comes with an aggressive, sporty look. It has a truss frame with an engine hanger that resembled that trellis we usually see in big bikes.

It has a pair of telescopic front shocks and a rear monoshock, all-LED lighting (including the head and rear lights) and comes with a futuristic instrument panel. It also has a muscular 12-liter gas tank complimented with aggressive looking fairings.

Unlike most bikes, the keyslot for its ignition is located just above the fuel tank.

The buttons on the left side of the handlebar has this inverted arrangement of signal button and the horn (horn on top of the signal toggle) which has been Honda’s trademark since the Honda Click was introduced.

The way the handlebar was positioned is something most speed freaks would like. It’s quite low for a standard bike (though not as low as the CBR150), yet it still allows the rider to sit erect on the saddle.

The CB150R’s turning radius is also quite generous compared to the CBR150, which would be very useful while filtering through city traffic.

At the heart of the Honda CB150R is a Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI), liquid cooled 149.16 cc DOHC engine that delivers a maximum power of 12.9 kw @ 9000 rpm and maximum torque of 13.8 Nm @ 7000 rpm.

The torque is something we felt right away while riding the bike around the 2.4-hectare Honda Safety Driving Center. The bike is somewhat at the heavy side at stand still, but you won’t feel this while throttling because it moves quite fast.

We managed to speed our way up to 70kph and felt it could still run faster than that (it has six speeds), but we’re running out of straight roads at the Safety Center.

The bike comes with a radiator with an automatic fan to cool off the engine just in case you’re stuck in traffic.

The Honda CB150R Streetfire, priced at P116,800, comes in two color variations: red and black.
