When Miss USA clumsily tried to sympathize with Miss Cambodia at the Miss Universe pageant for not being able to speak in English, the internet was quick to call her out.
"Miss Cambodia is here and doesn't speak any English and not a single other person speaks her language," Miss USA Sarah Rose Summer said in a video that's being widely shared on Thursday.
She was with Miss Colombia Valeria Morales, the one who hosted the Instagram Live video where the clip was taken from, and Miss Australia Francesca Hung -- both of whom agreed with Summer's opinion of Cambodia's representative, Rern Sinat.
"Could you imagine?" Summer continued. "Like Francesca said, that would be so isolating and I said yes. And I mean, just so confusing all the time. ...Poor Cambodia."
The video was swiftly reposted on several Instagram pages, Diet Prada included, a popular page that mainly highlights plagiarism in the fashion world but also calls out other failings within it.
"[Summer] hopefully will prove that ignorance will not win you a Miss Universe title," those who runs Diet Prada wrote.
"This is basically what normalized xenophobia looks like."
"If she's trying to show empathy, the condescending, intolerant tone tells a different story. A reminder that you're participating in a competition in a country/continent where English is NOT the primary language," the page concluded.
The 2018 Miss Universe pageant is being held in Thailand.
Another video, apparently from the same Instagram Live session, showed Summers appearing to poke fun at a candidate from Thailand's neighboring country, Vietnam.
"She's so cute and she pretends to know so much English," she said when asked for her opinion on Miss Vietnam H'Hen Nie.
"You ask her a question and after having a whole English conversation with her, she goes," Summer shared, before mimicking what is presumably Miss Vietnam's smile.
"She's adorable," Summer added, doing her impression of Miss Vietnam again and laughing.
