MANILA – Newly crowned Demi Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa admitted that the Philippines’ Pia Wurtzbach is among her favorite Miss Universe winners.
Nel-Peters made the statement during her “Ask Miss Universe” Twitter event last week.
She was asked to reveal her favorite Miss Universe titleholder aside from Margaret Gardiner, who won the crown for South Africa for the first time in 1978.
“I adore all previous winners but I really fell in love with Pia Wurtzbach after she won, and I love her reign,” she said.
Nel-Peters is set to visit the Philippines as part of her Miss Universe reign. The 2016 edition of the pageant was held in Manila last January.
Wurtzbach won Miss Universe in 2015 and is one of the judges of this year’s pageant, which crowned Nel-Peters. She is the Philippines’ third Miss Universe winner after Margie Moran in 1973 and Gloria Diaz in 1969.
After her reign, Wurtzbach was tapped as a Miss Universe ambassador. She continues her campaign on HIV/AIDS awareness, and is also busy with endorsement shoots and showbiz commitments.
