MANILA – ABS-CBN scriptwriters Ralph Lorenz G. Fonte, M.D. and Enrique S. Villasis bag medals anew at Palanca Awards.

After a two-year hiatus, the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature staged its 70th edition in Bonifacio Global City.

Fonte's "Uyayi ng mga Patay na Buwan" earned him first place in the Tula category and his second Palanca award.

According to Fonte, his literary piece tackles how humankind can help address climate change.

"Sa ngayon nararanasan natin ang climate change at ito’y nagbubunsod sa kagagawan ng tao. Sa excessive carbon emissions, pagsira sa kalikasan, pagkalbo ng mga puno at ano ano pa. Kung hindi tayo matututo sa ating pinagdaanan ay tadhanan talaga nating puksain ang ating mga sarili," he said.

Meanwhile, Villasis' "Pintula" won second place in Tula category, giving him his sixth Palanca award.

Pintula is an expression of Vicente Manansala’s paintings.

"Experience ang handog ng tula, ito’y nagbibigay ng karanasan at insight. Noong binubuo ko siya ay may arc siya sa ‘movement’— pag galaw, migration at the same time yung ‘desire’ ito ang nais iparating ng mga tula," Villasis said.

A total of 59 writers, 28 of which are first-time awardees, were chosen as the recipients of the 70th Palanca awards.

Named after businessman and philanthropist Don Carlos Palanca Sr., the Palanca Awards continuously seeks to cultivate local literature by providing incentives for writers, serving as a treasury of literary gems at the same time.
