MANILA – It was October last year when singer Rachelle Ann Go first found out that she will be part of the cast of the Broadway return of “Miss Saigon” in 2017.

In an interview with the entertainment website Pep, Go said “Miss Saigon” producer Cameron Mackintosh approached her in October 2015 and told her that she wanted to bring her to Broadway.

“It’s a secret, siyempre. Nalaman ko siya after nung 30th anniversary ng ‘Les Miserables’ noong October last year (It’s a secret, of course. I first found out during the 30th anniversary of ‘Les Miserables’ in October last year),” said Go, who is currently based in London to fulfill her contract with “Les Mis.”

“Cameron Mackintosh came up to me and he was like, ‘I want to bring you to Broadway,’” she added.

But Go’s journey to Broadway was not without obstacles. They first had to go through the Actors’ Equity in New York which Mackintosh described as “really strict.”

They submitted the required documents late last year and got their confirmation only in May 2016, during the Manila run of “Les Mis.”

“I was here May this year. Tapos, siguro mga first two weeks ko rito, nag-email na sila... I got an e-mail na na-approve na nga ‘yung Broadway (I was here May this year. I got the e-mail during my first two weeks here. They said my Broadway stint has been approved),” she recalled.

Go said she was so happy about the news that she couldn’t stop crying, but she was not allowed to tell anyone except her family, especially since auditions were still ongoing at the time.

“Kailangan talaga sila mauna sa pag-announce (They should be the ones to announce it first),” she said.

Go will fly to New York in January next year to prepare for the Broadway return of “Miss Saigon” scheduled in March 2017.

She will reprise the role of the hardened bar girl Gigi, which she played in the West End revival of the musical in 2013.
