Five beauty pageant contestants become roommates as they work together with two coaches and a team of fashion and media specialists on a new reality show.

"The People's Queen" is a reality show that challenges these Filipino pageant hopefuls as they aspire for their international titles.

Cecilio Asuncion, one of the show's coaches, said they are looking to redefine the role of beauty queens in an era of female empowerment and gender equality.

"We have a very holistic approach on how we train women. We really try not to create pageant patties and we want them to find their own voice," he said.

Contestant Katrina Dimaranan fully supports Asuncion's approach.

"There’s still that stigma of pageants being just about the glamour but a lot of people now, I feel, are realizing there are more to the women who joined the pageants," she said.

The show aims to explore the international competition for each contestant.

It puts on display for the audience that beyond the lavish gowns and colorful make-up, judges will want to see real, unfiltered women.

"It’s not always about what you look on the outside or if you’re even the most perfect one. It’s better to be perfectly imperfect," Dimaranan said.

"What’s really important is that they learned not to go and turn themselves into, or twist themselves into pretzels to make the crown fit them. You make the crown fit you and you tell us who you are as a person," Asuncion added.

"The People's Queen" will air in October on The Filipino Channel, Lifestyle, MYX TV and other video on demand platforms.
