LAOAG CITY - Grade school students of a private school showcased different kinds of robots in an exhibit held in Laoag City on Wednesday.

These robots were assembled and programmed by grades 4, 5 and 6 students of Kids Kollege.

It took the students three days to bring these well-designed robots to life.

A first in Ilocos Norte, the robotic exhibit was organized by Headstart Information and Technology and Consultancy, Incorporated (HITC), a private Information and Technology (IT) firm.

The students first underwent a two-month long workshop. They were then guided by the robotic training specialists of HITC and successfully put these well-designed robots into life.

The most outstanding robot presented was the walking humanoid robot. Just like the human body, this robot interacts with human tools and environments. It also has a fighting power.

Looking for someone to help you carry and transfer small things? Here’s a mechanical arm robot which functions just like a human arm.

An amazing robot assembled to detect lines and different colors with its light sensor was also showcased by the students.

Walking like a scorpion, spiker robot was also exhibited. This robot is ready to fire at anyone or anything that gets in its way. This is also a useful visual presentation of a predator and prey relationship in teaching ecosystem.

These robots can be controlled using smart phones.

According to Jerome Miguel, a robotics training specialist at HITC, integrating modern technology like the concept of robotics to classroom discussions is an integral part of the personal and academic growth of students.

"Since, ang mga bata natin ngayon ay mahilig sa technology, so why not i-apply sa education," Miguel said.

(Since children nowadays are into technology, why not apply it in education?)

He also added that it can add fun to learning.

For Dr. Betty Salvador, chief executive officer of Kids Kollege, robotics, which is now being offered by the school as part of its curriculum, is very beneficial not only in shaping students’ minds but building their social character as well.

"Ngayon ko lang po na-realize na napaka-important pala kasi nai-integrate sa science, math, computer as well as character education kasi ang kanilang attitude, collaboration, cooperative venture and learning together in manipulative way, napakaganda pala," Salvador said.

(I just realized that it is important because it integrates science, math, computer and character education. It involves their attitude., collaboration, cooperative venture and learning together.)
