LONDON - Vesti recently launched its men's bag collection which draws inspiration from London's fast-paced lifestyle.

Vesti was founded by UK-educated and award-winning designer Martha Rodriguez in 2012.

The brand showcases the craftsmanship of weaving communities in Mindanao, particularly Rodriguez' hometown of Cagayan De Oro.

"We felt, why not include the men? This is inspired by my London commute," said Rodriguez, while showing the bag collection.

She added: "The weave is not just outside, it's also inside. We want it to be pretty inside and out. I have been designing for four years now, and I'm very happy I finished my masters in London, and it's very timely for me to showcase it here."

The women's and men's bags, handbags, and minaudieres have the imprint of the rich cultural heritage of the T'boli, Yakan, Tausug, and Maranao.

The coral reef collection includes black and white acrylic with 12-karat gold and silver coral reef design handcrafted by local artisans. There are also pieces dedicated to T'boli princess Lang Dulay, showing the intricate process of weaving T'nalak.

During the Embassy Previews, Rodriguez shared with the guests her experience in co-creating each piece with Mindanao's artisan communities.

"The artisans are my partners and we both learn so much from each other," said Rodriguez. "Each piece you see tonight is an attempt to weave together the dreams and aspirations of Mindanao's indigenous communities, and the hope of the new generation of Mindanaoans for a community designed for peace."

Vesti is the first brand featured in the Embassy Previews by the Philippine Embassy in London. The event aims to promote Filipino designers and the communities they work with on a global stage.

"Through the Embassy Previews, the Philippine Embassy hopes to put the spotlight on world-class Philippine brands built on sustainable fashion, fair trade, and impeccable design," said Ambassador Antonio Lagdameo.

He added: "The program is aimed at providing emerging Filipino fashion designers a stage not only to show the world their masterpieces, but to also honor the work and heritage of various Philippine artisan communities that the designers are in close collaboration with."

"It's really a privilege to be here to witness one of our graduates, Martha, to launch her collection: beautiful quality for common good, with sustainability and ethics at the heart of it," said Erica Charles, a former mentor of Rodriguez.

Through her work, Rodriguez hopes to show the world the rich culture and heritage of Mindanao that many have never imagined existed. -- With Babo Gamboa
