NAGA CITY -- Looking for a unique and new adventure to try this rainy season? How does rappelling down a waterfall sound to you?

Rappelling is a controlled descent off a vertical drop, a technique usually done on rock or cliff faces by climbers, mountaineers and cavers. Descending down the rock face of a waterfall will definitely give guests a different kind of high.

While still relatively a niche activity in the Philippines, Jojo Villareal, manager of Kadlaggan Outdoor Adventure Tours based in Naga City, has been organizing waterfalls rappelling and canyoning tours since 2013.

His group first tried it in Malabsay Falls, one of the most easily accessible waterfalls at the foot of Mt. Isarog Natural Park and a popular tourist spot for swimming in Camarines Sur.

“Parang nagsawa ako na mag-rappel sa wall, building at cliff at may nakita akong pictures sa U.S. na nagra-rappel sa waterfall, kaya sabi ko i-try ko. Naiiba siya sa ordinary rappelling. Very fulfilling kasi may water factor kaya mas challenging. Kaya naging passion ko at gusto ko i-share yung benefits na nakukuha ng isang tao sa pag-rappell sa falls,” Villareal said.

While most people take a break from traveling and outdoor activities during monsoon months, according to Villareal, the rainy season is actually the best time to try the activity because of the stronger flow of water.

“Mas maganda ang tubig sa waterfalls 'pag rainy season at mas konti 'yung mga excursionista na pumupunta. 'Pag summer kasi konti lang 'yung tubig at ang daming tao na nagswi-swimming.”

He said waterfalls rappelling offers a thrilling, new experience that brings participants closer to nature, compared to just admiring waterfalls from a distance.

Through their joiner’s tours, the group makes it easy for anyone based or traveling to Naga City to join. They are open to solo joiners, couples, barkadas, families, and can cater to larger groups.

Villareal noted that most of their clients are young professionals, with a rising trend of solo female travelers the past few years. They also work with private companies for team-building activities.

Kaddlaggan Outdoor Adventure Tours currently organizes waterfall rappelling tours to several spots around the province of Camarines Sur, including Itbog Twin Falls in Buhi, Harubay Falls in Calabanga, Slide Falls in Brgy. Curry, Nalalata Falls in Bula, Kambal Falls in Sitio Tingtigon, Lagonoy and Malabsay Falls in Naga City.

They are also pioneering canyoneering activities in Nagsusom Canyon, a newly discovered area with a canyon, waterfall and cave system in Balatan.

“Grabe ang potential ng Camarines Sur as an adventure destination in the Philippines kasi kumpleto sa outoor setting. May mga bundok, dagat, ilog, kweba at karamihan pa ay undiscovered,” said Villareal.
