MANILA – Boy Abunda took his turn in the hot seat as the winners of Binibining Pilipinas 2018 asked him beauty pageant questions during his show, “The Bottomline.”

Bb. Pilipinas Supranational Jehza Huelar asked Abunda why there are physical requirements in pageants if such competitions aim to “emphasize inner beauty.”

He replied: “Inner beauty is not emphasized in beauty pageants. We are often accused that physical beauty is emphasized in beauty pageants, not inner beauty. But since you asked me the question, let me answer that. Beauty pageants should be holistic. It should be about beauty inside and outside. It should be the whole package.”

Karen Gallman, who was named Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental, asked Abunda about the “right time to listen and speak.”

The country’s “King of Talk” answered: “Every time is the right time to listen and to speak. But that’s not the issue. The issue is who you speak to and who you listen to. And I’d like to say that you listen to both the wise and the fools because we learn from the both of them. And the moment we learn from both the fools and the wise, we speak.”

“Another way to answer that… You speak when you have something to share, especially if you’re sharing something that will make this world a better place. You listen when your heart has no agenda. You listen when your heart is pure. Because only when your heart is pure can you actually listen and understand.”

Bb. Pilipinas Grand International Eva Patalinjug, on the other hand, asked for the TV host’s thoughts on “how to address misogyny or bias against women.”

“That was easy, but I had a question about that question,” Abunda replied. “Because misogyny is not bias. Misogyny is hatred. Bias is a light word. Misogyny is hatred against women. We should keep on talking about why this is so wrong. Because how can we possibly hate women or the people who brought us forth into this world? There is no place in this world to hate mothers and women.”

“I make my Nanay proud every day,” he continued. “We make our mamas proud. We are where we are because of our mothers. We have no right to hate women.”

Abunda advised beauty queens to not go for long answers and rather stick to key words, noting the 30-second limit in pageants.

He also shared how he would play “1 to 20,” a game of 20 questions, with former beauty queens such as Pia Wurtzbach and Rachel Peters.

As his last piece of advice, Abunda told Miss Universe Philippines 2018 Catriona Gray that the most important part of a pageant’s question and answer portion is to finish strong.
