Vigan City - The Ayusan-Paoa Spanish-Era Bridge, which was declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum, is set to become a tourist spot in Vigan City.

The city government of Vigan took action to preserve the bridge by cleaning its surroundings, days after its National Culture Treasure declaration on July 17.

The bricks that form the bridge, as well as the two arch shapes that serve as its foundation, are now visible after the cleanup.

After the Ayusan-Paoa Spanish-Era Bridge became a national cultural treasure, the city government is now studying the possibility of closing it permanently to motorists for better preservation and turn it into a tourist attraction.

The bridge is made from mud bricks, a mixture of lime and eggs, and has now become unstable from heavy vehicles that cross it as motorists prefer to take the old bridge than the newly constructed one beside it.

"Mahina na ang pundasyon ng tulay na ito kaya kailangan na talagang ipagbawal na ang pagdaan lalo na yung mga mabibigat na sasakyan, kailangan gamitin nalang yung bagong tulay sa tabi nya. Kailangang i-restore para mapaganda ang itsura niya at gawin nalang tourist spot din ng Vigan," Vigan Tourism and Investment Promotions officer Edgar Dela Cruz said.

Now, a sign stands on the Ayusan-Paoa Spanish-Era Bridge, informing motorists to use the other bridge.

The city government and the neighboring towns are continuously performing cultural mapping to document other historical structures that can make the list of National Cultural Treasure and Important Cultural Properties.
