Lea Salonga was much more relaxed when she graced this year’s Tony Awards compared to when she attended Broadway's biggest night more than two decades ago as a nominee for best actress in a musical.

On Sunday (Monday morning in Manila), Salonga, together with colleague Jon Jon Briones, appeared at the Tonys to introduce the performance of “Miss Saigon,” which was nominated for best revival.

The cast, led by best actress nominee Eva Noblezada, performed "This is the Hour" and "I'd Give My Life For You."

Salonga was wearing a gunmetal grey tuxedo by Filipino designer Rajo Laurel and styled by PJ Pascual. Her makeup was done by Yuko Takahashi.

In an interview with Spectrum News at the red carpet before the show, Salonga shared how thrilled she is to be part of the Tonys this year.

“I’m thrilled about that I get to introduce Miss Saigon’s number. Their presentation is fantastic. I’m looking forward to just watching Kevin Spacey kill it. I saw his dress rehearsals tonight and he was doing so amazingly well. I’m looking forward to all the best musical nominees making their presentations,” she said.

The acclaimed Filipina actress-singer also recalled how she felt hours before the big event back in 1991 when she herself was a Tony nominee.

“I think there’s nerves. You’re trying to appreciate every single moment that’s happening but at the same time, there’s lump in your throat because you know you’re up for awards. Those who are actually up for awards early in the evening are luckier because they get that out the away and just enjoy the rest of the night,” she said.

But on Sunday night, Salonga confessed that her only must-have was her phone which she intends to use in taking selfies “with as many people as I can.”
