MANILA -- Located in the northernmost part of the Philippines, Calayan Island may be considered as an alternative to Batanes.

To get to Calayan Island from Manila, visitors have to travel for 13 hours by land to Claveria in Cagayan. From there, they have to go on a boat ride for an additional four to five hours.

The boat leaves Claveria between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., provided that the weather is good. Boat fare is at P600 per person.

Once in Calayan Island, visitors can avail of homestays and resorts in the area. There are a lot of stores in the area, except near the mountain and the beach.
