MANILA -- Located in the northernmost part of the Philippines, Calayan Island may be considered as an alternative to Batanes.

To get to Calayan Island from Manila, visitors have to travel for 13 hours by land to Claveria in Cagayan. From there, they have to go on a boat ride for an additional four to five hours.

The boat leaves Claveria between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., provided that the weather is good. Boat fare is at P600 per person.

It is advised to bring medicines and food for the long, and sometimes rough, boat ride.

Once in Calayan Island, visitors can avail of homestays and resorts in the area. There are a lot of stores in the area, except near the mountain and the beach.

Transportation is through tricycles, motorcycles or kuliglig, which farmers use to transport their products.

Guided tours are also available. Guides charge between P500 to P1,000, exclusive of gas charge for their motorcycles.

There is an ongoing construction for an airport in the area which will benefit not only tourists, but locals as well.
