MANILA — Amid the controversy surrounding an ad about the supposed “unfair” advantage of fairer-skinned women over those with brown or dark complexion, proudly “morena” Filipinas have spoken up on social media to criticize the campaign’s discriminatory message.

Among them was TV host Bianca Gonzalez, who declared, “Hindi po kami kaawa-awa, maganda ang kulay namin.”
In a Western-influenced culture where lighter skin is a so-called standard of beauty, several other women whose stars shine bright in showbiz have proven that natural, brown skin is indeed also celebrated.
These stars from different fields — acting, music, pageant, and fashion — have proudly showed off their morena features, and by our account, have not recently endorsed a whitening product.
Sure, young viewers may identify and be inspired by them, but their complexion certainly isn't the best thing going for these women.
