BALER -- Heading to the surf town of Baler this summer? Here are just a few of the new dining establishments that dish out interesting twists on local specialties with good ambiance to boot.

Myrtle Park Baler. Kara Santos

Myrtle Park Baler

Myrtle Park Baler is a youthful lifestyle skate park and outdoor hangout where guests can enjoy good beach grub, drinks and music especially in the late afternoons to evenings. The Wrap n’ Roll stall serves gyros and Japanese street food like takoyaki ang gyoza, while the Pineapple Express stall serves beer and tropical cocktails infused with local ingredients like coconut rum and Barik lambanog. Board rentals and surfing lessons are also available at the park.

The Kubli Bistro paella. Kara Santos

Larger groups and families who want to enjoy good comfort food along with music from a live acoustic band can check out Kubli Bistro. This chill restaurant along an alley just off the main Buton Street offers a wide range of Filipino, Mexican, American and Italian dishes. The two-story air-conditioned restaurant has live music and an open mic every night. Their bestsellers include pizzas, paellas, pako salad, sisig, and Kubli rice topped with shrimp, octopus, mussels, fish, peppers and chili leaves served on a hot skillet.

Baler has become a popular destination for cyclists, but you don’t need to come from a long ride to appreciate the budget-friendly offerings of Bike King’s Kitchen. This bicycle-themed restaurant near Museo de Baler offers affordable all-day breakfast meals, sizzling dishes, pasta and noodles and fruit shakes. Bikers will appreciate the friendly vibe and quirky details including decorative bikes hanging up on the walls and bar stools made of old bike seats.

Boardwalk Restaurant by Bay’s Inn Resort

Boardwalk Restaurant is a new beachside buffet dining establishment located within the newly renovated Bay’s Inn Resort. The large restaurant serves a wide variety of cuisine including traditional Filipino dishes like pinakbet, kare-kare and lechon. Be sure to try their local specialties like kinilaw, pako appetizers and Suman de Baler, which is best enjoyed with Baler’s signature Peanut Butter. One whole section of the buffet called Bakerie is devoted to freshly baked breads, pastries, cakes and sweets.

Mumunsi Choclate Cafe. Kara Santos

Mumunsi Chocolate Café

Got a sweet tooth? Cap your meal with dessert at Mumunsi Chocolate Café, which specializes in all things chocolate. Cacao is endemic to the town of Maria Aurora right next to Baler and cacao trees are grown in backyards in the area. The café, which gets its name from a mountain where cacao trees are planted, serves and sells artisanal bean to bar chocolate and chocolate-based drinks and meals. Interesting dishes include the tsokolate de batirol, iced shakes spiked with chili, chocolate leaves and chocolate carbonara served with their own cacao shell focaccia.
