MANILA -- Before Korean barbecue became a big hit in the Philippines, there first was Mongolian barbecue.

The stir-fry dish was a major food trend in Manila back in 1990s. Today, save for a few top-of-mind restaurants likes Mongolian Quickstop and Sweet Inspirations, this type of cuisine has been pushed back to the back burner.

Enter Bad Bowl, which has reintroduced this do-it-yourself type of dining. And with laidback, modern interiors, it is obviously courting the younger market.

For those unfamiliar with Mongolian barbecue, it is neither Mongolian, nor a barbecue. Invented in Taiwan’s street food scene, this fare sees diners filling their own bowls with their own choice of meat, carbs, vegetables and seasonings. They then hand that bowl to the kitchen where it will be stir-fried on a grill in full display.

Bad Bowl is pretty much a straightforward Mongolian barbecue but with a wider variety of raw ingredients. For meat options, there is beef, pork, chicken, squid and shrimp. While for its carb options, it goes beyond white rice and noodles to include brown rice and adlai options.

An in-house chef is also there to assist you for any special requests, such as seasoning suggestions, and accommodating a separate cooking area for those with food allergies.

Pro tip: Squeeze some calamansi juice over your hot dish to add a refreshing, zesty flavor.

Another come-on for restaurant goers is the complementary soup and fruits to cleanse your palate in between unlimited servings.

Not keen on eating more than one helping of mixed rice and meat? You can always opt for ala carte dishes on the menu.

Bad Bowl is located at upper ground level of Robinsons Magnolia, Quezon City.
