MANILA – With Taal Volcano still on the brink of a “hazardous eruption,” people are advised to stay indoors to limit exposure to ashfall.

Those who have to go outdoors face a number of risks, according to the Department of Health (DOH) – from nose, throat, and eye irritation to minor skin problems, and difficulty breathing.

An N95 mask is effective in protecting the wearer from breathing in ashfall. But if it’s sold out, a decent alternative is a surgical mask with two layers of tissue to filter out harmful substances.

A wet cloth or towel is also recommended.

Skip the contact lenses and wear eyeglasses or goggles instead to shield the eyes from ash particles.

According to the Philippine Cornea Society, those who feel that ash has entered their eyes should use an eye lubricant or clean running water to flush it out instead of rubbing or scratching.

Those who experience symptoms such as poor vision or red, painful eyes are advised to see an ophthalmologist.

People are also reminded to check their hair before entering their home or any other establishment if they are caught by ashfall outdoors.

Once inside, keep windows and doors closed, and cover gaps with wet cloth to prevent the entry of ash particles.
