MANILA -- Tucked away in Sikatuna Village in Quezon City is Porch, which is part of the Casa Verde restaurant group. Originally the group’s commissary, the place eventually evolved into a bustling restaurant patronized by families, students, and barkadas.

“We decided to open up a take-out counter for locals, but we saw that we could open something else, and so Porch was born,” explained Patricia Noel of Porch.

Think of it like a neighborhood spot with diner fare at very reasonable prices (a trademark of Casa Verde restaurant, it seems). It’s almost always full, and there’s almost always parking. The menu is all about comfort food and large servings.

Here are seven things to try at Porch this 2017:

1. Fisherman’s Platter

If you like seafood... Photo by Jeeves de Veyra

Three kinds of seafood are battered and fried, which can easily feed a hungry barkada of three or four people. The platter has calamari, tavern shrimp, and fish fillet, to be dipped in your choice of either a buttery sweet and sour sauce, or a tangy tartar sauce.

2. Brian’s Ribs

Yes, the well-loved comfort dish in Casa Verde is also available in Porch. Tangy, sweet, with meat that falls off the bone, Brian’s Ribs continues to win fans by the bucket.

3. Chicken Fried Chicken

Chicken breast fillet breaded, fried, and served with a creamy gravy. This is one for the kids! (Or the kids at heart.)

4. The Count of Monte Cristo

This sandwich is quite filling. Photo by Jeeves de Veyra

Have you ever tried a Monte Cristo sandwich? Try the Porch’s version – white bread with ham, turkey and white and American cheese. The sandwich is battered and fried, served with a dusting of powdered sugar, and accompanied by the tangy sweet bite of raspberry preserve. Gooey cheese, a crispy crust, and the interplay of salt and sweet. This sandwich is a rich and comforting classic!

5. The Mighty Ton

Need to feed a lot of people? Try the Mighty Ton! A kilo of USDA tenderloin is used for the patty with fix-ins including 125 grams of bacon, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sautéed onions and mushrooms — all inside a 12-inch bun. Flavored fries (sour cream, barbeque, or cheese) are an included side to this giant burger.

6. Milky Way

The biggest milkshake in town! Photo by Jeeves de Veyra

Why not enjoy that big meal with what’s dubbed to be biggest milkshake in town? The Milky Way is almost a meter high and made from chocolate ice cream. It’s enough for two to three people, and quite impressive when placed on the table.

7. Ice Cream Cakes

Death by Chocolate is a Casa Verde’s signature dish that’s also available in Porch. But if you’re in the mood for something different, try Jayden’s White Choco Chill Out, dubbed to be the white chocolate version of Death by Chocolate – vanilla chocolate with almonds and crushed Oreo cookies on top of an Oreo crust. It’s basically a cookies and cream ice cream cake. There’s also this author’s personal favorite: Caramel Macchiato, blending coffee and caramel ice cream, sweet, but not too sweet.
