MANILA — Kapamilya actress Charlie Dizon revealed that her husband Carlo Aquino proposed during their trip to Thailand for her 30th birthday.

In an exclusive interview with Metro.Style, the two detailed their proposal story that happened in April 2023, just in time for Thailand's Songkran Festival.

“’Di ko in-expect na magpro-propose siya du’n kasi wala pa rin kaming one year nu’n,” the Third World Romance actress shared.

The trip was supposed to be a meet-up with Dizon's friends and a fun street party to celebrate her 30th year. But before their travel, Aquino already laid the foundation of his proposal by asking permission from his wife's parents through a video call.

“Nakakatawa ’yung video call with her parents at ’tsaka sisters,” Aquino mentioned. “So from Commonwealth going to Makati, magkausap kami. Sobrang traffic. Three hours kaming magkausap, tapos ayaw maniwala ng mom niya na magpro-propose na ako.”

“Yeah. Kasi nga parang iniisip nila, ‘Are you guys sure, kasi bago pa kayo?’” Dizon responded. “But hindi ko alam lahat ’yun. So nu’ng nag-propose, nakakatawa. Kasi ’yun ’yung worry ko, if alam ba ng family ko. Kasi siyempre, mag-isa ako dito sa Philippines.”

She said consulting her parents is necessary since she does not want them to feel "bypassed". After all, Dizon had always felt their unconditional love.

The actress also mentioned how the It’s Okay to Not Be Okay star was first able to build ties with her family during the courting stage. Aquino actually visited her parents and siblings who were based in the United States.

“Before din du’n, na-meet na rin naman ni Carlo ’yung family ko. Like actually, nagsabi pa lang siya na manliligaw siya, pumunta siya sa US mag-isa," she said. “Ta’s pumunta siya sa family ko nu’n. Ta’s ’yun, du’n siya nagsabi na balak niyang manligaw. So ’yun, nu’ng una, ’yun pa lang. Tapos biglang next year, nag-propose!” 

After the proposal was approved, Aquino then set a dinner at Chim by Siam Wisdom, a fine dining restaurant in Bangkok that earned a Michelin star for its high-quality cooking.

“Du’n ako nag-propose. Nagpatulong ako du’n sa best friend ko na Thai. Tapos, ayaw niya [Charlie] pang magsuot ng maayos nu’n. So sabi ko, ‘Mag-dress ka! Kami, naka-polo kami, ’tsaka fine dining ’yun,’” the actor narrated, to which Dizon chimed in.

“Actually, nu’ng sinabi niyang fine dining, du’n lang ako napa-dress. Kasi feeling ko, baka hindi ako papasukin,” she stated, who was thinking that it was just a normal dine experience.

“So busog na busog kami. Tapos nu’ng paalis na, sabi ko sa kaniya, ‘Ano nang plano natin? Ano nang next step?’” Aquino recalled.

The actress thought he was asking about their next potential destination, so she gave him some places, still seemingly innocent about where her partner was heading to.

Aquino's friend then helped with the conversation, asking what's next with the couple's lives. The actor took the opportunity to finally do the move.

“So kaharap ko ’yung best friend [ni Carlo]. Pagtingin ko, nakaluhod na siya. So ’yun pala, magpro-propose siya. So hindi ako makapaniwala!" Dizon stressed.

“Akala ko, nag-‘yes’ agad ako. Ta’s hindi pa pala. So parang sabi niya, ‘So ano’ng sagot?’ Sabi niya, ‘Kasi lahat ’to alam na ng lahat. Don’t worry!’” she added. “So du’n ko sinabi, ‘Oo naman!’ Akala ko nag-‘yes’ talaga ko in my mind. ’Yung parang ganu’n, sa sobrang taranta ko.”

The actress even thought that her partner only gave her a promise ring, but the latter was able to prove it by mentioning her family's approval.

“Ilang beses ko nang na-taping ’yung magpro-propose. Pero ’yung real thing, ibang-iba. As in sobrang nanginig ’yung tuhod ko. As in ganu’n ’yung feeling," Dizon added.

The two artists got married last June 9 in Silang, Cavite. The ceremony was kept in private, and the whole proposal was also a big surprise.
