The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which represents the recording music industry, unveiled the 2023 IFPI Global Album Sales Chart, in which 19 of the 20 ranked albums hail from South Korea.

The chart measures "unit sales across all physical formats, as well as full album downloads – a combination sometimes known as pure sales," the IFPI explained.

K-pop's rule over the chart was "unprecedented," the IFPI said, adding that it demonstrated the South Korean idol music industry's "global dominance of the physical album format."

In February, the IFPI crowned "FML" as last year's biggest-selling album in the world as it topped the Global Album Chart, which is based on "worldwide sales across streaming, download and physical music formats."

Taylor Swift's "1989 (Taylor's Version)" was the only non-Korean album to enter the Top 20 of the Global Album Sales Chart, ranking sixth.
