Joross Gamboa was always relegated to supporting roles, playing as goofy best friend of lead actors.

But 2017 could be his breakout year as he takes the lead in the musical dramedy film "Deadma Walking," an entry to this year's Metro Manila Film Festival.

Gamboa plays John who decided to fake his death so he can attend his own funeral.

"Nag-disguise siya para marinig ang eulogy ng tao," he said Tuesday in a TV guesting on Tonight With Boy Abunda.

Since winning in the talent competition Star Circle Quest in 2004, the newly-minted leading man said he didn't mind playing supporting characters when starting showbiz.

"Hindi ko pinangarap maging leading man. Dati kasi gusto ko maging komedyante. Mas gusto kung maging character actor," he said.

Years of experience, Gamboa said, helped him to finally take up the responsibility of a lead actor.

"Yung experiences ko sa buhay ko, yun yung nakakapagbigay ng fire sa loob ko. Yung experiences ko, hindi lahat magaganda pero lahat nagagamit," he said.

Gamboa also couldn't asked for a better role to cement his image.

"Sobrang ganda. Sobrang excited ako to promote," he said on getting his first mainstream role in Deadma Walking.

During the interview, Gamboa opened up about his marriage with Katz Saga.

"Hindi ako naging honest in all those years. The early years. Not all those years. Noong dating panahon na yun, medyo wordly ako," he said.

He also admitted that his leaked private video was part of those years.

"Bilang wordly, naghahanap ka ng happiness sa mga bagay. Bata ka, sikat ka. Pero yung sa amin ng wife ko, ngayon masasabi ko, I'm faithful," he said.

Those troubled times, however, didn't affect his relationship with his wife.

"No, kasi secured na kami with God. Pag nagkakasala ako, inaamin ko sa kanya lahat," Gamboa said.

Adding, "Ang una namin ginawa, nagpray kami. Kasi, don't worry of the things you can't control."

Deadma Walking, directed by Julius Alfonso and produced by T-Rex Entertainment, will open in Philippine cinemas on December 25.
