MANILA - Vice Ganda may have felt gutted after "The Super Parental Guardians" didn't make the cut for this year's Metro Manila Film Festival, but it's safe to say that he's in a better mood after seeing legions of fans flock cinemas nationwide for his film's earlier-than-planned opening.

On Wednesday, the comedian, along with "It's Showtime" co-host Anne Curtis, were mobbed by their admirers as they attended a screening for his movie at a local mall in Quezon City.

The two looked thrilled to see the crowd and flashed smiles and waved to those cheering for them. And despite the tight security, both Vice Ganda and Curtis still had to battle their way through a sea of people to get inside the cinema.

"The Super Parental Guardians" is Vice Ganda's second movie with "Ang Probinsyano" star Coco Martin. It follows last year's "Beauty and the Bestie," which still holds the record for the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time after earning more than P500 million.

Joyce Bernal takes the reins this time around following the passing of Vice Ganda's dear friend and blockbuster director Wenn Deramas, who helmed "The Beauty and the Bestie."

The comedy is also the debut film of child actors Simon "Onyok" Pineda and Awra Briguela, who have found fame following their stint on "Ang Probinsyano."

The plot follows Paco (Martin), a handsome, tough-talking gang leader, as he tries to raise his orphaned nephews with Arci (Vice Ganda), the loud, gay friend of his late sister-in-law.

The film proved controversial after being snubbed by the selection committee for this year's Metro Manila Film Festival.

Anticipating criticism over their decision, the committee's head, Nicanor Tiongson of the University of the Philippines Film Institute, said that their panel picked the entries based on "quality" instead of whether they will sell tickets.

Vice Ganda has repeatedly said that he wasn't offended by the decision, and hoped that fans would support his film, as well as the chosen entries to the annual film festival.
