MANILA - One can imagine the roller coaster of emotions basketball player Sol Mercado must be going through.

A day after winning his first championship trophy with Barangay Ginebra, his longtime girlfriend, actress Denise Laurel, made public on Instagram that they have called off their wedding plans.

"I just want to ask all of you for prayers right now and support," Laurel wrote on her account, after several fans tagged her in posts congratulating her boyfriend for his win.

"From now on Sol and I are just friends. I am very happy for him! But please don't tag me first on anything that has to do with him. We both tried our best."

She was also quick to downplay speculations that Mercado, whom she has been engaged to since 2013, cheated on her with another woman.

"Please respect Sol. He did not cheat on me. He didn't do anything wrong. We [have] both been trying for a while now. He's amazing and brought so much into my life. God has something's planned for us both."

Last May, Laurel confirmed to reporters that she and Mercado have decided to postpone their planned wedding to next year, with the reason being that they need more time to prepare.

At the time, she denied that there was trouble in their relationship, and expressed her excitement over having two weddings with Mercado.

Prior to her sudden reveal on Thursday, Laurel was spotted at Mercado's games against the Meralco Bolts, including the title-clinching nail-biter Wednesday evening.

The last photo that Laurel posted on her Instagram account with Mercado was back in May.
