'Darna' director, veteran writer Maning Borlaza dies

(UPDATED) Film director and veteran writer Emmanuel "Maning" Borlaza has passed away due to a heart attack. He was 82.

This was confirmed to ABS-CBN News' Mario Dumaual on Thursday by his nephew Roy Ramirez

Borlaza directed more than 20 films with award-winning actress Vilma Santos including "Bakit Kailangan Kita?" "Gusto Ko Siya Mahal Kita," "Ibigay Mo Sa Akin Ang Bukas" and the fantasy films "Dyesebel," "Darna and the Giants" and "Lipad, Darna, Lipad!"

He was also the director of Sharon Cuneta's hit films "Bituing Walang Ningning," "Bukas Luluhod Ang Mga Tala" and "Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin."

Borlaza also helmed Alma Moreno's movie "Eva Fonda 16" and "Blusang Itim" starring Snooky Serna.

In 1996, Borlaza once again directed the mermaid movie "Dyesebel" starring Charlene Gonzales.

Aside from being the vice chairman of Movies and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), Borlaza was also a chairperson of Directors’ Guild of the Philippines, Inc.
