MANILA -- “Hindi tayo puwedeng puro aura.”
These were the candid words of Dawn Chang on Tuesday which “It’s Showtime” host Vice Ganda took as an apparent jab at her former group, GirlTrends, which originated on the noontime program.
Chang was one of the judges in the “Sampu-Sample” segment, and was commenting on the performance of Powered Iox, one of the competing dance groups.
“I can see the technique is there. Gustung-gusto ko ‘yon, kasi ang pagsasayaw, hindi lang puro hataw. Kailangan may technique. Hindi tayo puwedeng puro aura,” she told the performers.

Vice Ganda, who was on stage beside Powered Iox, interjected and, in good humor, announced: “GirlTrends, pinariringgan kayo! Hindi pa tapos sa inyo si Dawn Chang.”
When Chang finished her turn to comment, Vice Ganda brought up the viral video of a GirlTrends performance which spawned memes about lacking synchronization.
He was referring to the group’s botched choreography to the tune of Sam Smith’s “How Do You Sleep” — a topic he already hinted at earlier in the segment, when Chang gave a “sample” of her dance moves.
“Ang galing sumayaw ni Dawn Chang, ‘no? Kaya iniwan niya ‘yung GirlTrends, e!” Vice Ganda said. “Kung ‘di ka umalis, sana trending ka rin. Sana hinintay mo ‘yung number na ‘yun!”
Chang was one of the original members of GirlTrends when it debuted on “It’s Showtime” in 2016. It has seen members come and go, with the current slate consisting of Chienna Filomeno, Joana Hipolito, Krissha Viaje, Mica Javier, Mikee Agustin, Jessica Marasigan, and Sammie Rimando.
In August, Chang confirmed she had already departed the group amid the “How Do You Sleep” fiasco, which she was not a part of.
On Tuesday, Vice Ganda revived the dance steps when he asked Chang to demonstrate the proper choreography.
“Ganyan lang kadali, bakit hindi pa nagawa ng GirlTrends!” Vice Ganda said, in jest, as he copied Chang’s moves. “Ganyan, hindi puro aura!”
“Hindi ako sure, naguluhan din ako sa kanila,” Chang added, triggering laughter.
Despite becoming the target of ridicule and amusement, members of GirlTrends, notably Filomeno, have taken the criticisms in stride. She even went along with a spoof of their “How Do You Sleep” performance, as seen in Chalk’s coverage of the ABS-CBN Ball with online personality Mimiyuh.
