Renowned for her crystal-clear singing voice, Filipino Broadway star Lea Salonga lent a unique flavor to the enduring pop hit “Take On Me,” as she took the stage Tuesday with a one-off performance of the a-ha tune.

Salonga, 47, was accompanied on guitar by musical director Cesar Aguas for the acoustic rendition — the opener of a press conference for her sold-out 40th anniversary concert in October.

Without revealing the title, Salonga introduced the performance as a “song that I’ve never sung before.”

A worldwide hit in the 1980s, “Take On Me” is a Norwegian synthpop tune that charted in dance lists, so Salonga’s quiet and vulnerable version was a refreshing take.

“I remember the video coming out on television, and how different [the song] was,” she said after her performance. “And then many, many years later, on YouTube, I caught a version similar to this one with the lead singer not having lost anything from his vocals. I definitely got inspiration from that acoustic version, and it was just so beautiful.”

Salonga was referring to Morten Harket, the vocalist of a-ha. In 2017, the band’s “Unplugged” version of “Take On Me” went viral.

The song will not be part of Salonga’s concert, she clarified, adding: “The next time I sing it will probably be a drunken karaoke somewhere with a bunch of my friends!”
