'Pamilya Ordinaryo' wins at 2016 Venice Days competition

MANILA – Lav Diaz's "Ang Babaeng Humayo," which won the top prize in the 73rd Venice Film Festival, isn't the only Filipino film that has been earning raves in the Italian city.

“Pamilya Ordinaryo” was also a winner at the 2016 Venice Days competition, an “independent event on the fringes of the Venice Film Festival, modeled on the prestigious ‘Directors' Fortnight' of the Cannes Festival.”

The movie, which stars Coco Martin's brother Ronwaldo Martin, brought home the BNL People's Choice Award after receiving 70.3% of positive votes from its audience.

According to the official Venice Days site, the prize was handed to the team behind the movie by the BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas, the main sponsor of event.

In an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer, “Pamilya Ordinaryo” director Eduardo Roy shared that it was their movie was the last to be screened in the section.

Roy, likewise, told Inquirer that he did not expect to win the audience-based award.

Prior to its participation at the 13th Venice Days, “Pamilya Ordinaryo” also took home the bulk of the trophies at the 2016 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival in the Philippines.
