HOLLYWOOD -- In taking on the lead role of Jack Malik, a struggling singer-songwriter suddenly catapulted to fame, British-Indian actor Himesh Patel took on the challenge of singing hugely popular Beatles songs and performing them live.

“It was amazing, really. I know (director) Danny (Boyle) wanted to record everything live because it just lends it a weight… There is maybe an added pressure to the moment, but at the same time it’s a challenge that I was thriving on and I loved it,” Patel said.

The film’s unique story imagines a world where the Beatles don’t exist and it seems only Jack remembers them and their songs.

It also deals with what matters most in life.

“There’s a line in ‘Let It Be’ that goes ‘And when the broken-hearted people living in the world agree, there will be an answer.’ It feels quite poignant here at the moment,” Patel said when asked what line among the Beatles songs really resonate with him.

The movie also stars pop superstar Ed Sheeran and Lily James of “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.”

“Yesterday” comes out in US cinemas starting June 28, and in the Philippines on July 24.
