MANILA -- With it being cut short last year, due to a myriad of technical difficulties that resulted in an irate crowd, expectations were a bit low for the Coke Studios concert this past week. The fans just want the simplest of things: to finally hear their favorites perform.

They got that, and then some. A diverse lineup captured the breadth of the energy and creativity that has revitalized the OPM scene in recent times, from the disco funk-inspired rockers IV of Spades to the cream of the crop of young rappers Shanti Dope.

Urbandub, a shout-out include for those a tad older than the mainly teenage audience, delivered in their performance of their fist-pumping hit, "First of Summer," early on in the concert.

It perhaps helped the crowd shed their inhibitions, and by the time pop stars KZ Tandingan and apl.de.ap hit the stage, they were ready to throw themselves into a party with infectious spirit.

There's little rhyme or reason to how the sets were arranged -- this on-off approach (interviews with the artists were interjected in between) creating a glaring disparity between the highs and lows.

But with the highs being dizzyingly fun (indie darlings Ben&Ben had everyone singing along to "Maybe the Night"), nitpicking seem ill-advised. Fans want some good-natured fun, and they got it in the form of the collaborations Coke Studios is famous for.
